TALK TO ME.
Communicating with Animals

by Barbara Paster

Animals have birth families, fears, sadness and joy, just like we do. Their thoughts and emotions, although not as complex as ours, are just as real and just as deep.

Often overlooked for who they really are, animals so deeply appreciate being spoken to, heard, and recognized for their spirits. If you had a child that for some reason could not communicate as "normal" people do, whether deaf or autistic, you would do everything in your power to find a way to fully communicate. Wouldn't it be amazing if we treated our animals with the same passion.

It is wonderful when people begin to realize how deeply their animals feel, how much they are aware, and even sometimes how opinionated they can be. They have amazing personalities. They can be funny, serious, sweet, gentle, smart, silly, and even enlightened. You can know your animal on a certain level, but when you begin to communicate with them, a whole new world can open up.

Animals communicate by thoughts, visual images and emotions. We too have this ability and with a little technique, patience, love, and practice, we can easily learn to communicate without words. This new world can be fun and rewarding, exciting and loving for us and our animals.

They are always communicating with us. They may not appear to be listening because they don't use the physical acknowledgments that we as humans are use to. They could be chewing on a bone or grooming themselves while having a conversation. They hear what we have to say and always feel what we feel.

You can't imagine the elation and gratefulness animals have when you begin to communicate and they realize they are being heard. When I acknowledge an animal in depression, even if only for a few minutes, sometimes their whole life changes. They have an excitement when they know they are being listened to and that someone actually realizes that they too are "human".

Have you ever had a dog or cat just start to stare at you? Yes, they are trying to talk to you. Are you listening?
